Rome: Vaccines Using Aborted Fetal Cells are Acceptable

January 13, 2021

In a new official document Vatican states “it is morally acceptable to receive covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process.”

On December 21, 2020 the Vatican’s “Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede” (CDF) – “Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith” – issued a “Note on the morality of using some anti-covid-19 vaccines”. The CDF “Note” aimed at answering “several requests” that the Congregation had received “for guidance regarding the use of vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes covid-19, which, in the course of research and production, employed cell lines drawn from tissue obtained from two abortions that occurred in the last century.”

“Since the first vaccines against covid-19 are already available for distribution and administration in various countries,” CDF “Note” says, “this Congregation desires to offer some indications for clarification of this matter. We do not intend to judge the safety and efficacy of these vaccines, although ethically relevant and necessary. … Here, our objective is only to consider the moral aspects of the use of the vaccines against covid-19 that have been developed from cell lines derived from tissues obtained from two fetuses that were not spontaneously aborted.”

Point 2 of the “Note” states: “… when ethically irreproachable covid-19 vaccines are not available (e.g. in countries where vaccines without ethical problems are not made available to physicians and patients, or where their distribution is more difficult due to special storage and transport conditions, or when various types of vaccines are distributed in the same country but health authorities do not allow citizens to choose the vaccine with which to be inoculated) it is morally acceptable to receive covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and production process.”

Following Point 3 immediately clarifies: “It should be emphasized, however, that the morally licit use of these types of vaccines, in the particular conditions that make it so, does not in itself constitute a legitimation, even indirect, of the practice of abortion, and necessarily assumes the opposition to this practice by those who make use of these vaccines.”

We must also point out that, for the first time, an official Vatican document explicitly declares that compulsory vaccination is not admissible. Point 5, as a matter of fact, says: “… practical reason makes evident that vaccination is not, as a rule, a moral obligation and that, therefore, it must be voluntary. … Those who, however, for reasons of conscience, refuse vaccines produced with cell lines from aborted fetuses, must do their utmost to avoid, by other prophylactic means and appropriate behavior, becoming vehicles for the transmission of the infectious agent.”

But, let’s come back for a moment to vaccines made using aborted fetal cell lines. It is very interesting how the Vatican document has been communicated around the world: the message received is that there has been change within the Roman Catholic Church, which now finds it “morally acceptable” to receive covid-19 vaccines using cell lines from aborted fetuses.

Moreover, on December 11, 2020 Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, the Vatican’s Governorate Health Director, declared to Vatican News that covid vaccination at the Vatican will begin this January (vaccination campaign will start tomorrow – January 14, 2020) and that they will start with the Pfizer vaccine, which is precisely developed from cell lines of aborted fetuses during its research phase. The message that emerges  – beyond what is actually written in the CDF “Note” – is, thus, a reversal of what the Catholic Church has always maintained regarding the defence of life.

Faced with the enormous manipulation and instrumentalisation of the CDF “Note,” it obviously necessitate a prompt and clear denial and one which leaves no room for any misunderstanding. Yet, this hasn’t happened. Instead, there has only been silence from the Holy See, specifically from the CDF. It is also fair to say, this is not the first time such an occurrence has taken place in the last years. The silence in this case – of all Vatican competent bodies – can only be but complicit with those who conceive foetuses and embryos to be mere biological material to be freely utilised and complicit with those who attack life.
