After prohibiting vaccine and health related passports on a statewide basis, Florida also ends all local restrictions and mandates on businesses and individuals.
After prohibiting vaccine and health related passports on a statewide basis, on Monday 3rd May, 2021 Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, promulgated an Executive Order which suspends all local covid-19 restrictions and mandates on individuals and businesses. Executive Order Number 21-102 (“Suspending All Remaining Local Government Mandates and Restrictions Based on the COVID-19 State of Emergency”), which “is effective immediately”, states: “In order to mitigate the adverse and unintended consequences of the covid-19 emergency and to accelerate the State’ s recovery, all local covid-19 restrictions and mandates on individuals and businesses are hereby suspended.”
“This Order eliminates and supersedes any existing emergency order or ordinance issued by a county or municipality that imposes restrictions or mandates upon businesses or individuals due to the covid-19 emergency.” … “For the remaining duration of the state of emergency …, no county or municipality may renew or enact an emergency order or ordinance, using a local state of emergency or using emergency enactment procedures …, that imposes restrictions or mandates upon businesses or individuals due to the covid-19 emergency.”
In a press conference in St. Petersburg, Florida Governor criticized other states’ handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as strict regulations imposed in certain cities in Florida. “I think folks that are saying they need to be policing people at this point – if you’re saying that, you really are saying you don’t believe in the vaccines,” DeSantis publicly said. “You don’t believe in the data, you don’t believe in the science. We’ve embraced the vaccines. We’ve embraced the science on it.”
During his press conference, DeSantis also signed a Bill limiting the state’s and local governments’ ability to shut down businesses and schools during an emergency. “The Bill ensures that neither the state or local governments can close businesses or keep kids out of in-person instruction unless they satisfy a demanding and continuous justification,” he declared. The new Law will go into effect on July 1 conversely the Executive Order is already in effect.
DeSantis also stated covid-19-related fines will be remitted for individuals and businesses and said the new Law will not only affect local governments but will also allow the Florida Legislature to overturn a governor’s executive order if it is deemed to infringe upon an individual’s rights and liberties.
